Dear Diary

This holiday season, the Rooted Lyfe team wants you to give yourself the gift of self-care. We know how stressful things get and have prepared this special Self-Care Blog Series for you, bringing you our favorite tips to you each week to get you through to 2019…and beyond!

Dear Diary? OK, this is too cheesy, even for me.

Journaling has never been my thing. The thought of putting my thoughts down on paper where someone might find them terrified me.

(Maybe it was because my older brother cracked the code to my “super secure” diary when I was seven years old and found out I had a huge crush on Dave. Though, it took me longer to write in a journal again than it did for him to stop teasing me!)

Realistically, it was fear that someone might see the vulnerable parts of me. Fear of judgment. Fear of rejection. Fear. Enter my lifelong friend, again – Anxiety.

In the midst of my emotional crossroad a couple of years ago, I finally gave in and gave it a shot. It might have been because I had bought yet another beautiful blank lined notebook from Target with the guise that this would be the one I would write in. Well, it worked this time.

I sat down for the first time, clueless about what to write. I felt juvenile. Do I recap my day? Sure. But what does that recap mean? Not a list of things that kept me busy. Not tasks. But experiences, and relationships, and goals, and emotions…all mixed into one. While those first few posts felt completely awkward, I soon found a rhythm of my own that helped me break through the chains of my anxiety-ridden thoughts.

Now is as good of a time as ever to give it a try. Try it. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Enhance your sense of well-being
  • Reduce symptoms of depression before an important event (like an exam)
  • Reduce intrusion and avoidance symptoms post-trauma
  • Improve your working memory
